Sophie was born in July 2004. She’s our little “sweet pea”.
She’s been a “go with the flow” kind of girl from the start!
Her personality is sweet – wanting to cuddle or give kisses.
And her smile and giggle can light up the room!
Sophie was diagnosed with Rett Syndrome in March of
2006, at around 20 months of age. She progressed as far
as sitting up, but has consistently had low muscle tone and
does not crawl or walk. She also has never developed
spoken words. She’s lost most of her purposeful hand use,
unable to manipulate most toys or feed herself.
She currently participates in the Early Intervention program
through the state of Illinois and works with a great team of
therapist that include a physical therapist, occupational
therapist, developmental therapist and a speech therapist.
She has started using switches to activate her electronic
toys, like Elmo and bouncing Tigger and has started using
it for voice output, like telling daddy she wants “more” at
the dinner table!
She works hard every day at bearing weight on her legs,
standing at the couch and “walking” around the house with
the help of mommy or daddy, so that someday she may
walk on her own! Sophie loves to watch Sesame Street &
Mickey Mouse Clubhouse. She is a big fan of books – her
favorite being ‘Big Red Tub’. She chooses that one almost
every night!
She enjoys lots of music. She and mommy go to the YMCA
to swim, too. She’s also quite social, getting such a kick out
of watching other kids play and get loud! Sophie is very
bright, and her family is eager to find ways to help her
communicate and explore in this world.
