Our daughter, Ellie, is a bright-eyed, darling 9-year-
old girl who happens to have Rett syndrome. Rett
Syndrome became apparent in Ellie one month before
her first birthday, when the skills she reveled in
learning began to disappear. The neurological
disorder left Ellie unable to walk or talk, and with very
little purposeful hand use. However, Ellie is very
smart little girl who uses all of her energy trying to
show you that she understands, she’s “in there” and
she wants to learn. She uses primarily eye-gaze and
facial expressions, with a little body language to
communicate. Improving this one area of Ellie’s life,
even slightly, would mean improving Ellie’s quality of
life tremendously.
Ellie’s favorite things in life are summer swimming
(including beach-going), spending time with her
extended family, eating in, eating out, and watching tv
and movies. She lives with her mom, dad and a 4-
year-old brother, Bryce, who expresses his love for
her every day and sees her as a typical sister!
